"Embedded" is a term which is used in computer technology to describe the situation in which part of the computer system is physically incorporated into a device or system. For example, an embedded system is a computer within a radio, such as the radio in a car. An embedded system contains the main control logic and memory for the device.
Because the main control logic is physically contained within a device or system, an embedded system operates under the constraints of the physical characteristics of the device or system.
There are different types of embedded systems. The most familiar type of embedded system is a simple one-chip microcontroller system. Embedded systems can also be based on complete computer systems such as mainframes, mini computers and supercomputers.
An embedded system is usually tied to a specific device because the hardware is so much cheaper to build than a computer. For example, the hardware for a microcontroller is much cheaper than a mainframe. Thus, it is common for embedded systems to be used for low-cost products such as personal computers, medical devices, toys, portable phones, and household appliances. The main drawback to embedded systems is that it is very difficult to change the software once the hardware is built.
Also, the use of embedded systems can be limited by several factors. For example, the amount of memory available on the embedded system is limited by the amount of memory the device contains. Also, the control speed of an embedded system is limited by the speed of the microprocessor.
